I was not an avid reader or writer during my academic years. I haven’t read a book properly until my high school years. Although I did write essays for classes, the writing was not something that sparked my interest. However, a turning point happened when I started to pick up a book that interested me. I’ve always wanted to learn about online marketing, and a book that I had picked up unexpectedly allowed me to start reading.
Once I picked up the book (about marketing) and read it through, it was a new gateway that opened. I’ve never thought that I would read the whole book in a single session without stopping it. Right after that, I have implemented what I’ve learned from the book and noticed that I was able to achieve anything. And by that time, I realized that reading was not too bad.
You see, reading a book doesn’t have to be something that you do it forcefully. If you do not like to read, then you always have the option not to read. Or find an alternative way to read it, such as audiobooks. (And yes, the audiobook is somewhat the new trend, but print books are still popular)
And there are millions of books with countless genres that you can choose from. We are living in a time of life where it is easier to read than ever because we have a laptop, tablets, and smartphones (or any other computing device) that we can utilize to read any content online.
The reason I recommended reading is that it also led me to start writing too. If we think about learning, we learn it to utilize it.
For instance, if we learn how to draw for the first time, we will likely try it out. So, if we know how to read, then why not try writing?
Although learning can also be done verbally, it can also be through a written text. And where do we find these written texts? Books.
What are books actually?
Books can also be seen as a compact text that has been written by qualified people who have knowledge in a specific niche. Writers of these books usually have thoroughly researched what they wrote and have portrayed their thoughts and information in a book.
Anyone who wants to learn deeper into a certain subject is more likely to read a book rather than getting the information piece by piece. Not only that, it is more challenging to learn this way, but it is also disorganized.
On the other hand, books are organized with different sections that include descriptive examples in each part. Therefore, books allow readers to understand the context fully without needing to require external help.
When we consistently read books, then there needs to be an outcome. Some may only read to have the joy of reading, but most people read to employ what they’ve learned from reading. The more you read, the better you understand how to write. And this happens because you are more exposed to textual contents.
Ways to Start Writing Immediately
The more we get exposed to textual contents allows us to learn the structure of the writing as well as improve our understanding of vocabularies, tones, structure, spelling, grammar, and more.
I highly recommend you to use Grammarly if you are new to writing. It is an essential app that I recommend to everyone who is looking to write. And yes, our team and I use it all the time. Using Grammarly allows you to save time and money. Click the link below to learn more.
As every book has each unique voice, readers can see the different types of voices and use writing to make their own. Isn’t it interesting that all writings have a distinct voice? Even if we use the same words, we can structure the sentences and paragraphs differently to portray our style.Isn't it interesting that all writings have a distinct voice? So, let’s get straight into ways you can improve your writing skills:
1. Keep Reading
To be better at writing, you will have to start reading. You do not have to read a 1,000-page book, but you can start with any book (whether short or long) that you can start and finish.
Once you read the first book, you will gain confidence in reading the next book, and so forth.
2. Be Consistent
Reading shouldn’t be a one-time session. Instead, it should be a passive skill that we have in our daily life. We can read anything: news articles, newspapers, magazines, blog articles, and more.
Make sure you implement reading in your daily life. It’s always easier to read when you have a book with you all the time. If that is difficult, download news apps that you can read it throughout the day.
3. Start Writing
Once you’ve done the reading, write down how you feel. If any questions sparks while reading, make sure that you write it down so that you can write the response to that question.
Journals are also a great way to start because it is very private/personal. You can write a few sentences about your day and see if you can write in longer forms over time.
4. Repeat Step 1 to Step 3
To be better at writing, you should always keep in mind that step 1 to 3 is essential. Reading and writing should be repetitive.
5. Share Writing
If you continue the previous steps, and feel more confident about your writing, try sharing it with others.
There are many ways in which you can share your writing. It can be through platforms like Medium or your own personal blog.
When I first started blogging, it felt very fulfilling. The fulfillment of sharing my thoughts with the world is great for some people. Once you share it, it becomes a unique piece of written text that no others can duplicate.
6. Receive Feedbacks
Lastly, receiving feedback from others is one of the best ways to improve your writing.
Whether people agree or disagree with your writing, you will realize that your writing is readable for most people. And if you do get any criticism, you can always shift your perspective and read your own writing with a different perspective.
This way, you will be able to find your own style and eventually improve your writing skills in a matter of time.
Now that you understand how to improve your writing, why not start taking action today?
