So what is living in the moment all about? In a nutshell, it is about appreciating the present and living every moment of it. There is a wonderful saying by American cartoonist Bil Keane:
“Yesterday’s the past, tomorrow is the future, but today is a gift. That’s why it’s called the present” — truer words could not have been spoken. Often we dwell on the past and worry so much about the future it is enough to trigger an anxiety attack!
If you are someone who is constantly thinking “what if” and/or wonder if you had done things differently, snap out of it right now! The past is over; it can never come back and nor can we go back in time to change anything. What’s done is done. On the other hand, the future is too far and unpredictable so quit worrying about how things will pan out and focus on what’s at hand.
Something as simple as living in the moment or appreciating the present can bring us happiness and fulfillment in ways we did not imagine. For this purpose, we must train our minds to do so. According to Positive Psychology.com, personal development coach and author Myrko Thum states:
“Being in the present moment, or the “here and now,” means that we are aware and mindful of what is happening at this very moment. We are not distracted by ruminations on the past or worries about the future but centred in the here and now. All of our attention is focused on the present moment”
Let’s read about ways to live in the moment than having regrets about the past or wondering how the future will be:
1. Stop Waiting For The Perfect Moment
Blame Disney movies and other popular culture elements like fairy tales, we are a society obsessed with perfection. Nothing is good enough for us unless it’s relevant in today’s social-media dominated times or “Instagram-worthy”. Our idea of happiness is so flawed that we refuse to let happiness in when it is right there knocking at our door. Why must we always keep looking and wanting someone else’s idea of happiness? If we do this, we will never be happy. So, appreciate what you have now and choose to be happy with it.
2. Let Go Of The Past
Letting go of the past is the best way to practice living in the moment. When we let go of the past, it is a tremendous burden off our minds and relationships. As soon as you do this, you will feel light and happy. Letting go of what you cannot change will make you appreciate the present and be more mindful of it. The past has already happened, there is no changing it. So, let it not ruin our present.
3. Stop Worrying About The Future
Worrying about what we don’t know is useless. It is a waste of time and causes unnecessary anxiety and stress. No one knows what’s going to happen for sure. However, our actions in the present can have a huge impact on how our future unfolds. So if you are simply worried about the future but not doing what it takes to ensure it is a happy one, you are ruining your present and future both. Also, when you look back on it, it will only fill you with deep regret.
4. Appreciate The Little Things You Do or Have
It could be your favorite dress, an old picture from your childhood, the food on your table, or the laughter of children in the garden; take pleasure in all these things. Rather than constantly worrying about how you will secure your future, relish the present and things will find a way of working themselves out.
5. Find The Positive In The Negative
Treat every bad experience as a stepping stone to something better. Always tell yourself, everything happens for a reason. Even if it is bad today, tomorrow things will get better for sure and make me wiser.
6. Declutter And Cleanse
Let go of things that are old, broken, and essentially useless e.g. broken teacups, magazines, clothes that you don’t use anymore, boxes and jars, etc. It is said that if you don’t use something for an entire year, chances are you might never need it. Junk and clutter block positive energies and good things in our lives. So do away with the old to make way for the new!
It’s also recommended to declutter your mind as well.
7. Be Excited About The Future
Remember, you are the architect of your life. Every day can be wonderful if you decide. Look forward to every day when you wake up with excitement and optimism. Give yourself a pep talk and believe good things are coming your way. Our thoughts become things – the good ones will automatically attract good things.
8. Choose To Be Happy
Nobody’s life is perfect even if it seems so. Comparing ourselves to others and wanting what others have will only bring us despair. Each one of us is a unique personality with a unique life story. No two people can be the same much less their lived experience. So quit wanting what your friends have and be happy with what YOU have. Focus on your capabilities and expertise and create the life you want.
9. Slow Down
Start living slowly and mindfully. This implies taking the time to let every moment sink in. For example, when visiting your parents, don’t be in a hurry to get home for work the next day. These moments will never come back, so slow down, enjoy your time, be grateful, and appreciate it. If you are out for a walk, reflect on everything you see, the rays of the sun, the dew drops on the leaves, the flowers in bloom – revel in it all and be a happy and content person.
If we start living in the moment, half of life’s battle is won. When we appreciate whatever little we have, appreciate ourselves and focus on living the best life based on our unique individuality, abilities and personality, nothing can stop us from being happy.
Dwelling on the past and worrying about the future will do us no good. In fact, it will only bring us more unhappiness and anxiety that will hamper our personal and professional progress. So decide to live in the moment today. It’s not that hard!
