The Pomodoro Technique

The founder of the Pomodoro technique is Francesco Cirillo who discovered the positive effects of setting a short time for a task and tracking it with a Pomodoro timer. As a university student in the 1980s, Cirillo like many of us, students or not, struggled with time management and getting his assignments and papers done in time. When long hours of study time didn’t work for him, he decided to set aside merely 10 minutes of his time to finish a task. He found a Pomodoro timer (a timer shaped like a tomato) and set it to 10 minutes. In those 10 minutes, Francesco discovered the technique worked and thus was born the Pomodoro technique. 

According to Francesco, to date over 2 million people have used the Pomodoro technique and the number is growing. It has received, by and large, positive feedback from its users and advocates. Its philosophy is simple,

“work smarter, not harder”.

  • Step 1: Choose the task or assignment you wish to get done and dedicate yourself to achieving it while cutting out all distractions.
  • Step 2: Set the Pomodoro for 25 minutes 
  • Step 3: Work on your task or goal for 25 minutes until the Pomodoro rings. While working, if there’s something else you remember you have to do, write it down on a sheet of paper.
  • Step 4: When the Pomodoro rings, put a green checkmark on the sheet of paper
  • Step 5: Take a short break lasting 5 to 10 minutes.
  • Step 6: Repeat the cycle and earn Pomodoros. After you earn 4 Pomodoros, take longer breaks of 30 minutes or more.

It all boils down to the Pomodoro timer, getting the work done and check-marking the to-do list.
